Artist Statement
I acknowledge the WodiWodi people of the Dharawal nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which I work and live. I pay my respects to all First Nation people, their connection to country and recognise that Sovereignty was never ceded.
Janine Bailey is an artist who cultivates slower relationships with the materiality of printmaking, sculpture and drawing. Her approach amplifies processes such as folding, pulling, tracing and stretching and is exemplified by her use of felting – a textile producing practice in which natural fibres are condensed and pressed together.
In this interchange between materials and artist there is both comfort and agitation as possibilities for expression and healing emerge. Materials such as wool, stone and charcoal assume an empathetic quality, which is enhanced when Bailey’s sculptural and graphic works are considered alongside her felted birds and other animals. These kindly creatures ranging from vaudevillian parrots to mythical ‘brolgaroo’ offer constancy in times of trouble.
Bailey extends her interest in questions of communication, gender identity and sustainability in work that combines found materials, participatory sculpture and performance. In this capacity, Bailey leads workshops and teaches courses for all ages.
